1. Molecular formula: CaO
2. Molecular weight: 56.077
3. Physical and chemical properties:
Calcium oxide is an inorganic compound commonly known as quicklime. The physical properties are white powder on the surface, off-white when impure, light yellow or gray when containing impurities. Calcium oxide is an alkaline oxide, sensitive to moisture and hygroscopic, and can easily absorb carbon dioxide and moisture from the air. It reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide and generates a lot of heat, which is corrosive.
4. Characteristics and uses:
Calcium oxide is widely used in industrial production and daily life. It is used as a slag alkali enhancer in the steelmaking process. It reacts with iron oxide at high temperature to produce calcium iron ore, which can absorb non-metallic impurities and form easy-to-handle slag, thereby improving the efficiency and quality of steelmaking. It is one of the key raw materials for making cement. Calcium oxide reacts with materials containing silicon dioxide at high temperature to form calcium silicate, which then reacts with water to form hydrated calcium silicate, and finally forms cement stone. It provides calcium components in the production process of aerated bricks to generate crystalline or colloidal hydrated calcium silicate and calcium aluminosilicate products, so that the products have other properties of certain strength. In agriculture, it is used for disinfection, water purification, soil improvement, etc.
